The Bodyfurn Chair: Providing Fluid Movement for Music Students

Like other students, music students spend a significant amount of time seated on chairs practising their notes. Some instruments may require the player to stand, yet most players assume a sitting position.

Victor Sazer, musician, suggests that sitting is more problematic than standing. The ideal way to sit, Sazer recommends, is in a manner that provides the body the same support and freedom of movement as when we stand. Based on this assessment dynamic seating solutions are needed to accommodate such fluid movement.

Ruyton Girls’ School is currently using the Bodyfurn chair in the music classrooms and the orchestra hall. Peter Sharples, Business Manager, says that the school was looking for a replacement for the rigid straight back chairs the orchestra used to have; and since the school had previously experienced the ergonomic benefits of the Bodyfurn System in its other classrooms, they decided to trial the chairs in the music rooms. Because students can spend lengthy periods sitting on the chairs and as each instrument player sits differently on the chairs while playing, Peter notes; “we thought something ergonomic might be more appropriate and the students found the Bodyfurn chair comfortable.”
